Galleria Dallas Partners with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to Celebrate Black History Month

During the month of February, Galleria Dallas will host the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas for a month-long partnership which highlights the history of Girl Scouts and celebrates the accomplishments of women in scouting through several events and installations.

First, on Friday, January 27, North Texans can visit a new exhibit entitled Girl Scouts Celebrate Black History Month. The interactive display tells the story of Black and African American women and girls who are making a difference in the world, honoring the legacy of those who have gone before and creating generations blessings for their families and communities.

The Gallery Wall features an array of inspiring stories, bridging the past, present and future of Girl Scouts. Included is the story of Josephine Holloway, who began working to create Black Girl Scout troops beginning in 1924. She led the first African American Girl Scout Troop in Tennessee, and one of the first in the country. During her tenure, she mentored more than 2,000 Black girls and adults.

Present day leaders including DeSoto’s Deborah Franklin and Tanya Clay of Service Unit 213 and mother-daughter duo Majorie and Michelle Burrell of Richardson’s Troop 1906.

Plano’s Zara Jones, a Gold Award Girl Scout who restored the Plano African American Museum during the pandemic, is one of the stories highlighting the future of scouting.

Central to the display is a tribute to Fort Worth’s Mrs. Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

Representatives of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and some of the wall honorees will be available on Friday, January 27 when the wall in unveiled.

The timing of the display falls during the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, which runs through February 27. Every purchase of a box of Girl Scout Cookies fuels local Girl Scouts’ adventures throughout the year – exploring what interests them, discovering their passions, and taking action on issues they care about.

“As the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world, the Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches young girls valuable skills and introduces them to new opportunities,” said Jennifer Bartkowski, CEO of GSNETX. “We are so excited to collaborate with Galleria Dallas on this special exhibit honoring the contributions of Black Girl Scouts and leaders. It is our hope that this diverse display of amazing women leaders helps all girls realize their potential.”

The Galleria Dallas will also host teams of Girl Scouts to run cookie booths each weekend in February. The booths will be located in the south node of the Galleria, near Sephora.

After being suspended for two years during the pandemic, Cookie Box Creations also returns this year to Galleria Dallas. With the goal of creating the next generation of STEM leaders, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas pairs teams of Girl Scouts with architects and engineers in a design contest to transform Girl Scout cookie boxes into free standing structures. This year’s theme, Discover America, National Parks, will showcase different national parks and their habitats throughout the United States.

On Sunday, February 26, seven teams of Girl Scouts from 6th – 12th grade will work from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. creating free-standing themed structures using a maximum of 1,000 empty Girl Scout Cookie boxes. In addition to being adjudicated by a panel of experts, the beautiful creations will also be judged by the public, who can choose a favorite using a QR code on the signage describing each design. Participating architectural and engineering mentor companies include Cisco, Kimley-Horn, VLK, Balfour, JL Paving, HKS and ASCE.

Girl Scouts from the area are invited to view the creations and celebrate a successful cookie season on March 12, when Galleria Dallas hosts Girl Scout Skate Day from 12-6 p.m. at Galleria Ice Skating Center

Galleria Dallas also chose to support Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas by purchasing boxes of Girl Scout cookies to present free of charge to each person who utilizes the center’s Curbside pickup service during the month of February.

“In celebration of the 2023 Cookie Season, we are excited to work alongside the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to present an exciting month of learning and engagement,” said Megan Townsend, Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing. “As a former Girl Scout myself, I can attest to how impactful my participation in the Cookie Program was in shaping me to becoming who I am today. It is amazing to be able to showcase so many amazing Black leaders shaping not only scouting but our world.”

We Are Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs across 32 counties, Girl Scouts of all background and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges – whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or to the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them. Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas serves nearly 20,000 girls and 8,000 adult volunteers. In 2018, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas opened the STEM Center of Excellence, a 92-acre state-of-the-art camp just outside of Dallas where girls can experience programs in astronomy, robotics, coding, computer science and more.
